Ear Pain

Although children are much more prone to develop it, anyone can suffer from ear pain. Ear pain not only makes you have a hard time performing day-to-day activities, but is also painful enough to make you restless, frustrated, and unable to sleep at night. Causes of Ear Pain
There are many things that you may do without even thinking that will inflict severe pain to your ears. For instance, swimming without ear plugs often allows bacteria from the water into your ears and may cause an infection. Suffering from a cold or virus often puts pressure against your ears; in the same way, something such as a tooth ache may also cause pain in your ear due to pressure. Some people experience ear pain when they are doing high altitude activities such as flying, diving, or driving in the mountains. Although this rarely happens to adults, small children may lodge an object in their ear and then experience pain. Sinus problems are also a common cause of ear aches.

Home Treatments
If you suffer from pain in your ear, try to sleep with the affected ear facing up. While you might be tempted to believe that sleeping on your aching ear would release pain, this is not the case. Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and other over-the-counter pain medicines may help you to get relief and sleep at night. Since warmth can often help to eliminate pain, hold a warm hand towel to your aching ear; do not apply anything too hot since this could burn both your ear and your face.

Seeing a Doctor
If your ear ache does not go away, or if you have puss or liquid coming out of it, then it is important to see a doctor. Some ear pain is a sign of a serious infection which should be treated as soon as possible. Even while on antibiotics, you can continue to use pain medicine and hot compresses to sooth the pain.

Preventing Ear Pain
While there is no sure way to prevent ear pain, there are some steps that you can take to better protect your ears. First, be careful when you are in loud environments; if you are often exposed to loud noise, consider using some sort of ear protection. Do not listen to loud music and avoid headphone as much as possible. Never put any foreign objects into your ear canal. Children and adults should always wash their hands and avoid touching people who maybe sick.
